The work comes from the sketchbook of an unknown French artist who travelled through the Netherlands, Belgium and the Rhine region in the mid-19th century, capturing Dutch and Flemish landscapes in particular. Date: 19th century Description: From the centre of a canal, the anonymous artist views the bridge, which looks like a simpler model for the Wieck Bridge. A few silhouetted figures stroll along the promenade. The depiction captivates with its reduced use of colour. While the sky is kept in shades of grey, the scenery in the lower half of the picture stands out dark and with a soft sepia shimmer.
