A figure with a pannier on his back crosses a simple wooden lifting bridge in the foreground. Several sailing boats are moored at a small jetty with a guardhouse on the left. The work comes from the sketchbook of an unknown French artist who travelled through the Netherlands, Belgium and the Rhine region in the mid-19th century, capturing Dutch and Flemish landscapes in particular.
