Date: 19th century Description: Elegant and clad only in a light shawl, a young woman holds a small child on her knee. Numerous small fairy creatures and fairy-tale figures are depicted on the reverse. There is another portrait on the reverse. The present sheet comes from the sketchbook of an anonymous artist who mainly drew motifs from everyday life in the Tyrol region and southern Germany. His collection also includes depictions of ships and castles, which suggest that the artist travelled to the coastal regions of northern Germany or along the romantic Rhine and Moselle valleys. His drawing style remains sketchy and demonstrates the spontaneous character of the artworks, which the artist must always have made on the spot in his sketchbook or on a notepad.
