Lange & Söhne Tourbillon "Pour le Mérite" reference 701.005 ranks among the most significant timepieces of modern German watchmaking. Introduced in 1994 as part of the first collection following the revival of the historic Glashütte manufacture, it marked - powerfully and unmistakably - the return of A. Lange & Söhne to the sphere of international haute horlogerie. A technical milestone is the first-ever combination of a tourbillon with a chain/fusée transmission in a wristwatch. The tourbillon cage weighs barely 0.5 grams, measures 12.3 mm in diameter, and consists of 76 individual components. The stepped planetary gear system compensates for the decreasing torque of the mainspring, integrated into a miniature cone (the fusée) composed of 38 parts. Inside beats the hand-wound calibre L902.0, whose elaborate finishing can be admired through the sapphire-crystal case back. The 38.5 mm platinum case pairs with a solid silver dial, blued hands, and the characteristic layout of small seconds at 9 o’clock, power-reserve indicator at 3 o’clock, and tourbillon at 6 o’clock - resulting in a design that is both classical and beautifully balanced. Only 50 examples of the platinum reference 701.005 were produced. Its exceptional rarity, technical sophistication, and pivotal role in the rebirth of A.
