J. Assmann - American Market An exquisite, extremely rare gold enamel Glashuette hunting case pocket watch in a lavishly ornamented case - manufactured in quality 1A Movm. No. 5718, Case No. 5718, Dimensions 52 mm, circa 1873, Weight 118 g, Origin Deutschland Case: 18 K gold, black enamel inlay, case design "Juergens", Renaissance style high relief ornaments. Dial: Silvered, applied gold floral ornaments. Movm.: 3/4 plate movement, lever escapement, gold screw compensation balance. This hunting case watch features a wonderfully preserved engraved case, which is decorated with floral elements, tendrils, blossoms, and a striking pinecone motif on the rear hinged cover. The rim of the case, band, centre and bow are likewise decorated with geometric friezes. Despite some signs of age, the dial retains an opulent presence. Its centre is elaborately embellished with floral engraving, while the edge is beautifully finished with applied gold ornaments - truly a showpiece of the highest order. Judging from the 18 K decorative case and the elaborate dial the watch was probably made for the American market, which was at the time the key market of the Assmann company. The engraving "J. Assmann Dresden" on the gold dome and the plate supports this notion. At the time US law required that the provenance of the watch was stated. As Glashütte was still unknown at the time, both A. Lange & Cie. and J. Assmann signed their export pieces "Dresden". Source: www.glashuetteuhren.de Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running.
