Second edition (1st 1809-1829), called "Édition Panckoucke", for which the printer received the permission of printing by Charles X the 23 juin 1821, before the publication was even finished. First encyclopaedia on Egypt concerning its ancient ("Antiquité", 5 vol.) and modern history ("État moderne", 2 vol.), the geography (1 atlas vol.) and natural history (3 vol.). Splendid illustrations, for which the best engravers were requested. The "Description" is composed of 886 plates, some on double pp. or folding: 2 frontispieces (portrait of Louis XVIII and "Tableau des monuments [...]", nicely hand-coloured), 419 pl. for the Antiquity (Philae, Edfu, Minet-Abou, Luxor, Abydos, etc.), 170 pl. for the "État moderne" (architecture, inhabitants, "métiers", etc.), 51 maps (incl. the "carte d'assemblage"), 167 zoological pl. (shells, reptiles, insects, birds, etc.) and 77 botanical pl. Copy also including 12 unnumbered plates in vol. V "Antiquité" (8 pl. "Inscriptions intermédiaires de la pierre de Rosette", usually bound in the in-plano vol. (missing here), 1 pl. with "Tableaux des constellations semblables dans les planisphères", 1 pl. "Canevas trigonométrique du Caire" and "Canevas trigonométrique d'Alexandrie", and 1 pl. "Produits de la machine à graver") and 1 unnumb. pl. in vol. II "État moderne" ("Médailles trouvées en Syrie"). With the addition of the unnumb. plates, this set totalises 898 plates. Complete with the 2 ff. "Description du Tableau" and "Médailles", and also with the general table of plates. The Atlas also contains an engr. title and an engr. leaf with two tables: "Caractères topographiques" and "Alphabet harmonique". The "Description" initiated the fascination for Ancient Egypt and established Egyptology as a scientific discipline. Ref. Cp. "[Voyages] Jules DUMONT D'URVILLE - Voyage au pôle Sud et dans l'Océanie Chez Gide à Paris, 1841-1846 - Édition originale de cet important récit relatant les voyages sur les corvettes l'Astrolabe et la Zélée exécutés par ordre du roi pendant les années 1837-1838-1839-1840. Reliures d'époque en demi-basanes fauves, dos à 5 nerfs, caissons ornés et pièces de titres de maroquin, frottements avec quelques petits manques de cuir sans gravité, reliures solides. Bel exemplaire bien complet des 9 cartes dépliantes, intérieur bien préservé dans l'ensemble, avec des rousseurs éparses et certains cahiers brunis. Traces d'humidité au dernier volume. Il s'agit du troisième voyage autour du monde de Dumont D'Urville qui contribuera à la science de manière considérable dans les domaines de la zoologie, de la botanique, minéralogie etc... Au cours de ce voyage, Dumont d'Urville et Charles Hector Jacquinot sont amenés à explorer les îles Marquises, Tahiti, les îles Tonga, la Nouvelle-Zélande ou encore la Tasmanie, les archipels Hamoa et Viti, Vanikoro, les îles Salomon, les Carolines, la Nouvelle-Guinée et l'Australie puis les mers australes : Dumont d'Urville atteindra les terres antarctiques en janvier 1840. Il mourra 2 ans après dans les circonstances tragiques de la catastrophe ferroviaire de Meudon. Cette édition, l'originale du texte, comporte la relation du voyage racontée par Dumont d'Urville puis terminée à partir du volume 4 par l'hydrographe de l'expédition Vincendon-Dumoulin à partir des carnets de notes de l'auteur et en conservant la première personne, une autre publication comportant un total de 30 volumes essentiellement composés d'Atlas In-Folio riches en planches illustrées a vu le jour, publiée d'abord par Dumont d'Urville puis terminée après sa mort, par Charles Hector Jacquinot. And 6 maps by J.-B. Bourguignon d'Anville: the ancient World, Western part of the Roman Empire, Eastern part of the Roman Empire, Gaul, Ancient Italy and Ancient Greece.

Atlas assembled to order containing 60 maps, including "Atlas des Pays Bas" by Covens and Mortier. 17th-18th c Folio: engr. title and 60 double-page maps (7 fold.), borders and most cartouches hand-coloured (paper strip with ms. title pasted over printed title, damp stains in some upper margins, occ. spots, few maps with light soiling on verso). (pl. 6 missing, damp stain on title and first pl., (heavy) foxing throughout, often marg.). Contemp. half sheep, marbled paper over boards, flat, titled spine (heavily rubbed, lower part of spine missing). Atlas only of the first edition of the account of the unsuccessful expedition led by Rear Admiral Bruni d'Entrecasteaux in search of La Pérouse who had disappeared in Vanikoro in 1788. Ill. with an engr. typographical title, a double-page map by J.-D. Barbié du Bocage ("Carte réduite de la Mer des Indes et d'une partie de celle du sud") and 42 plates representing a black swan from the Cape Maria van Diemen, a calao from Waigeo, plants (eucalyptus cornuta, chorizema ilicifolia...), autochtons from New Zealand, New Caledonia, "île de Beaupré", etc. Ref. BLAEU, Joan Theatrum orbis terrarum sive Atlas Novus Pars Quarta. Amsterdam J. Blaeu 1645 Large folio: [10 incl. engr. title]-460-[1] pp.; 58 maps (text lvs and maps sl. browned, rather heavily dampstained and occ. moulded in upper part, marg. tear p. 97, hole in maps of Oxfordshire, Suffolk, and in text p. 385). Contemp. vellum, gilt-decorated covers and spine (spine damaged, used). S.w.a.f. First edition of Blaeu's Atlas of England, in Latin. Most maps are engraved after the lavishly decorated and highly accurate copperplates by J. Hondius who, between 1605 and 1610, was employed by John Speed to engrave the plates for his "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine" (London 1611-12), the earliest published atlas of the entire British Isles and a standard reference until the beginning of the 18th century. For the text part J. Blaeu used W. Camden's Britannia (1st 1586), the first chorographical survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. DU SAUZET, Henri Atlas portatif de CCLXXXV cartes, de plusieurs habiles geographes ; où sont representées toutes les parties de la terre. Avec un discours sur la cosmographie, contenant un abregé de la sphere, de la géographie et de l'hydrographie. Amsterdam H. du Sauzet 1734 2 parts in 1 vol., obl. 4to: 16 pp.; 135 pl., 2 pp.; 150 pl. (sm. defects). Contemp. mottled calf, gilt-decorated covers and spine with raised bands (joint partly split, sm. tr. of use). Only 9 copies know worldwide. Very rare and quite unique du Sauzet edition of Cloppenberg's Mercator Atlas with a very typical size of the maps (c. 18,4 x 25,4 cm), between the usual folio maps and these of the Atlas Minor, and with engr. map numbers, indicating that it is the 2nd du Sauzet ed. Nevertheless this early copy has the original Cloppenburch maps of Spain (without 1738), Switzerland, Scotland and Ireland, and some handwritten plate numbers as in the 1st du Sauzet ed. Incl. an engr. title, 2 letterpress titles, A.A. Bruzen de la Martinière's preceding letter, the table of contents listing 285 engr. maps, a celestial map, the world map "Typus Orbis Terrarum" showing the western coast of Australia "Na. Hollandia vulgo T'lant van Eendracht", 9 maps with continents and a plethora of country and regional maps of Europe, Africa, Asia and Sanson's Florida and Canada, Nova Anglia, Nova Virginia, Hispania Nova, etc. Very fine condition, maps in-plano (not folded). CAPITAINE, Louis; CHANLAIRE, Pierre-Gilles Carte chorographique de la Belgique en soixante neuf feuilles dressée d'après celle de Ferraris [...]. Paris chez l'auteur-propriétaire P.G. Chanlaire an V = 1796 In-f° : titre, 68 ff. (souill. aux titre et marges de qqs ff., qqs rouss., plutôt marg.). Demi-basane de l'ép., plats de papier marbré, dos lisse (plat sup. détaché, fort us.). Seconde éd. (la 1ère publiée sous le nom de L. Capitaine seul) de l'atlas détaillé de la Belgique par Capitaine (1749-1797) et Chanlaire (1758-1817). Contrairement à la mention du titre, l'atlas comprend 67(65 + 53 bis + 58 bis)cartes et 1 petite carte générale d'assemblage,datée de l'an V [1796-1797], qui indique le rapport entre la présente carte d'une part, et la "Grande Carte de France" (= carte dite de Cassini) et celle de Belgique (= carte de Ferraris) d'autre part, de manière à pouvoir "réunir des feuilles prises indistinctement" dans l'une ou l'autre édition.En bas de titre gravé, mention : "Gravé par Mlle Bellanger". "Antoine Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville - La conchyliologie ou histoire naturelle des coquilles Chez Guillaume de Bure à Paris, 1780 - Troisième et dernière édition de ce grand classique d'histoire naturelle, bien complet de ses deux volumes de texte et de l'Atlas de planches. L'ensemble souvent dépareillé est ici en reliures uniformes d'époque, plein veau et pièces de titres aux dos, à noter des épidermures et accrocs. L'ensemble est néanmoins en assez bonne condition, avec traces d'humidité sur une partie des pages, complet du frontispice d'après François Boucher et des 80 planches en noir de coquilles et coquillages d'après De Favannes. Planches tirées de BEAURAIN «Histoire militaire de Flandre depuis 1690 jusqu’en 1694 qui comprend le détail des marches, campemens, batailles, sièges et mouvements des armées du roi et celle de ses alliés pendant ces cinq campagnes» (Paris, 1755). DELAMARCHE (F.) - Atlas de géographie ancienne et moderne à l'usage de l'école de Saint-Cyr, des collèges et des maisons d'éducation. Paris, Chez Delamarche et Dien, vers 1820 . in-folio, 33 planches, reliure demi-veau brun, dos lisse, état moyen.

ROBERT de VAUGONDY, [Gilles & Didier] Atlas universel [...]. Corrigé et augmenté de la carte de la République française divisée en départements par C.F. Delamarche [...]. Paris Delamarche [after 1788] Folio: [4 incl. engr. title]-36 pp.; 117 maps, all border-coloured (occ. spotting, mostly marg., few sm. tears in folds, renewed endpapers, few margins starting to fray). Mod. half leather, marbled paper boards, flat spine with orig. spine preserved (very lightly rubbed). Complete later ed. of Vaugondy's Atlas, the first ever sold in France by subscription. With a title engraved by Ch. Baquoy, retouched by Barriere, and 117 maps of which the cartouches attracted unanimous praise from critics. The Atlas "commode, complet, uniforme et suivi" came to be the public's choice for more than a century. It was indeed not designed for the scrutiny of geographers, but for the public for "whom the maps furnish a means by which one might be transported to the scene and find oneself on the threshold of judging events and even of reflecting upon the future." Nonetheless, the de Vaugondys searched for geographical information with great thoroughness and used its sources according to a strict method.
